| Bridge Replacement Work to Commence on Route 120, Town of New Castle The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) today announced the award of a $17.9 million contract to replace the State Route 120 (Quaker Avenue) bridge over Metro North Railroad in the Hamlet of Chappaqua, Westchester County. The contract was awarded to the Conti Group of New York City. The project is approximately 1.1 miles long and will extend from the intersection of Route 120 (Quaker Avenue) and Hunts Place, east along Route 120, across the bridge to the intersection with Greeley Avenue. Construction is planned to begin in June and is expected to be completed during the fall of 2010. The project calls for replacing the 78-year-old bridge with a new, wider bridge that includes architectural details similar to those found on the original structure. NYSDOT worked closely with the community and the State Office of Historic Preservation on the design of the replacement bridge. The new bridge will be faced with natural stone masonry and include pedestrian period lighting. Its steel beams were designed to mimic the steel detailing of the original bridge. The project also will include new curbs and sidewalks along Route 120 (Quaker Avenue), a closed drainage system, improved landscaping, natural stone-faced retaining walls and maintenance paving along Route 120 (Quaker Avenue) from Marcourt Drive to Route 117. During construction, Route 120 (Quaker Avenue) will have one lane of traffic open in each direction during peak hours with work zones protected by temporary concrete barrier. Construction over the train tracks will necessitate limited night work, as train service can not be disrupted during the day time hours. Access to the train station and the business district will be maintained at all times and a temporary pedestrian bridge will be built to provide sidewalk access along Route120 (Quaker Avenue) during construction. Travelers are advised to watch for temporary lane closures, flagging personnel and occasional traffic stoppages as this work progresses. |

| News from New York State Thruway Authority Thruway Authority to Start Next Phase of Tappan Zee Bridge Deck Replacement Project ALBANY, NY (07/09/2010)-- The New York State Thruway Authority announced the next phase of deck replacement work on the Tappan Zee Bridge will begin July 12, 2010. This project is part of the Authority's on-going commitment to fulfill its responsibility to maintain and operate the bridge by making the necessary investments to assure safe and efficient travel for thousands of motorists who cross the bridge daily. The $148.8 million deck replacement project will replace the center three lanes, which is expected to start next summer. Other work tasks to be performed this year include: installation of safety railing, repairs to the east deck panels at identified locations, and relocation of the existing fiber conduit under the bridge. When completed, approximately 96 percent of the original deck will have been replaced since the Bridge opened in 1955. The work is to be done in sequential order, is weather-dependent and is subject to change. Updates will be issued announcing any change in schedule. Lane closures will be announced as necessary during the following days: Monday, July 12 through Thursday, July 15 Work will begin at 8 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right southbound lanes and one right northbound lane at 9 p.m., and an additional right northbound lane at 11 p.m. until 6 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least two lanes southbound and one lane northbound will be opened to traffic from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. During Monday and Thursday night's operations, due to the southbound lane closures, the southbound entrance at Interchange 10 will be closed and southbound traffic will be detoured on a posted detour route through Nyack to the entrance at Route 59 near Interchange 11, from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. All lanes will be opened by 6 a.m. Friday, July 16 Work will begin at 9 p.m. resulting in the closure of two right southbound lanes and one right northbound lane at 10 p.m., and an additional right northbound lane at 12 midnight until 7 a.m. from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment on the Tappan Zee Bridge. At least two lanes southbound and one lane northbound will be opened to traffic from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. During Friday night's operations, due to the southbound lane closures, the southbound entrance at Interchange 10 will be closed and southbound traffic will be detoured on a posted detour route through Nyack to the entrance at Route 59 near Interchange 11, from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. Due to the northbound lane closures, the entrance ramp from Broadway (southbound) in Tarrytown will also be closed from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. All lanes will be opened by 7 a.m. Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18 No work scheduled. These lane closures are required in order for the contractor to be able to perform preparation work for the installation of the security fence on the steel barriers and surveying work from milepost 13.8 to the west abutment. For the safety of the public and construction workers, motorists are urged to proceed with caution and obey posted work-zone speed limits. Work will proceed weather-permitting, and schedule updates will be announced as needed. Traffic updates will be broadcast to motorists thru Variable Message Signs along the highway and by Highway Advisory Radio, 530 AM in the Tappan Zee Bridge corridor, as well as 1610 AM in the Newburgh area. The second phase of the deck replacement project is slated for completion in the Winter of 2012. | Notes | ||
| ROADWAY RECONSTRUCTION TO COMMENCE ON ROUTE 17 Eight Miles to be Upgraded for Future Interstate 86 Designation in Orange County The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) today announced the award of a $63 million project to reconstruct Route 17, including the construction of one new bridge and the rehabilitation of three bridges, in the Town of Wallkill, Orange County. The contract was awarded to Lancaster Development, Inc. of Richmondville, New York. The project begins at Exit 121, Interstate 84 and continues east for approximately eight miles to Exit 116, near the border of Orange and Sullivan counties. Construction is planned to begin in the spring of 2009 and expected to be completed by the winter of 2010. Work will include interchange improvements at Exit 120 (Route 211), 119 (Route 302), Exit 118 (Brown Road), and Exit 116 (Route 17K). Work at the interchanges will include widening and lengthening existing on and off ramps, widening shoulders and improving geometrics of the ramps to meet federal interstate standards. In addition, the highway, including adjoining ramps, will be resurfaced along with the rehabilitation of the Route 17 bridges crossing Route 17K, Route 211 and the Norfolk Southern Railroad. The project will construct one new Route 17 bridge over a future local road to connect two existing shopping centers, just east of Route 211. An auxiliary lane between Exit 121, Interstate 84 and Exit 120, Route 211 will be built for both east and west bound traffic, providing for a total of three lanes in each direction. These additional auxiliary lanes will improve the operations and safety for travelers entering and exiting Route 17 from the I-84 and Route 211 corridors. The resulting project will better accommodate traffic entering and exiting Route 17 as well as bring the facility up to interstate standards. The project will improve overall safety and operations along the Route 17 corridor through the Town of Wallkill. Route 17 will have two lanes of traffic open in each direction during construction with the exception of eastbound between Exit 120, Route 211, and Exit 118, Brown Road, which will have one lane of traffic only. Travelers are advised to watch for temporary lane closures, flagging personnel and occasional traffic stoppages as this work progresses. FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATE Friday, May 21, 2010 TRAVELER ADVISORY NY Route 17 Lane Closures between Exits 119 and 116 Town of Wallkill, Orange County Motorists are advised that the New York State Department of Transportation will be conducting lane closures on Route 17 eastbound and westbound between Exit 119 (Route 302) and Exit 116 (Route 17K) for road reconstruction. Beginning Monday, May 24, and continuing through the fall season motorists should expect brief traffic stoppages in both directions for rock blasting after 10:00AM, Monday through Friday. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver's license. |

| News for Immediate Release June 25, 2010 Route 6 Bridge to return to Two-Way Traffic Wednesday Motorists will need to stay alert for changes Dunmore - PennDOT will reopen the Route 6 bridge over the Delaware River at Matamoras, Pa. and Port Jervis, NY, to two-way traffic by the end of the work day on Wednesday (6/30). The contractor will move the barrier to the upstream side of the bridge, then eradicate pavement markings and change signage. The detour utilizing I-84 to Exit 1 also will be removed. While the bridge will be open to two-way traffic, motorists will need to be aware of the new temporary width restrictions. Each of the lanes will be 12 feet wide with an oversized load restriction to 11 feet because of the barrier. It is important to note that work on the two open lanes is not complete, yet has progressed enough to allow the contractor to set the deck in place. Because crews will continue to work around traffic, drivers need to be aware of construction vehicles and workers without being distracted by the work and must adhere to the 25 mph speed limit. Motorists will not be able to turn left onto Delaware Drive as that roadway will only allow right turns from Delaware Dr. to Pennsylvania Ave. Current traffic pattern in that area remains the same. Left turns onto Water Street will not be allowed during this traffic phase. In the upcoming months, another traffic switch will occur, splitting the traffic around either side of the center lane in order to complete the bridge painting. This bridge project includes rehabilitation of the deck, beams, stringers and bearings; fabricated structural steel repairs; repair of expansion dams; pressure mortar surfacing plus painting for preservation. Funding is through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. Anticipated completion is this Fall. Contractor is Minichi Construction. | News Release DUTCHESS COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS, ENGINEERING DIVISION Date: May 13, 2010 County Bridge Closed Poughkeepsie - The Dutchess County Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced County Bridge D32 on Ridge Road over the Coopertown Brook in Dover has been closed, effective immediately due to identified structural deficiencies. The 110-year old bridge had been slated for replacement, which is currently scheduled for the 2014 construction season, to be funded with federal transportation aid. Design planning for a new bridge had already begun by Dutchess County DPW engineers. A recent inspection discovered significantly accelerated deterioration of the existing bridge, forcing the immediate closure for safety. DPW's engineering team is exploring other possible options for temporary improvements to restore the bridge to service and accelerate the new bridge construction. |
